{"id":43,"date":"2014-08-18T13:24:36","date_gmt":"2014-08-18T13:24:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/healthcare.davidstates.net\/?p=43"},"modified":"2014-08-18T13:24:36","modified_gmt":"2014-08-18T13:24:36","slug":"ebola-versus-sars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/healthcare.davidstates.net\/?p=43","title":{"rendered":"Ebola versus SARS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Worth looking at the way we responded to SARS vs. what is happening with Ebola<\/p>\n<p><strong>SARS timeline<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Timeline_of_the_SARS_outbreak\">http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Timeline_of_the_SARS_outbreak<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The first cases of SARS in humans probably occurred in November 2002 but the WHO was not notified until February 2003.\u00a0 Within a year, we had:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identified a previously unknown pathogen<\/li>\n<li>Obtained a complete genome sequence<\/li>\n<li>Developed rapid PCR based diagnostic tests<\/li>\n<li>Deployed these tests in the field<\/li>\n<li>Tracked all known cases across three continents and several major cities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>By May of 2004, a little over a year after the WHO was first notified, the epidemic was completely controlled and there have been no new cases since.\u00a0 Note that SARS is a respiratory pathogen transmitted by aerosol.\u00a0 It is far more contagious than Ebola and the epidemic rapidly spread to major urban centers.\u00a0 From a public health perspective, SARS was an extraordinarily challenging threat and yet under 1,000 people worldwide died of SARS.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ebola timeline<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2014_West_Africa_Ebola_virus_outbreak\">http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2014_West_Africa_Ebola_virus_outbreak<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The first case of the 2014 Ebola epidemic probably occurred in November 2013 and the WHO was notified in March of 2014.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Known pathogen<\/li>\n<li>Already have genome sequence and extensive laboratory experience with this virus<\/li>\n<li>Both PCR and ELISA tests are available now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/ebola-virus\/basics\/tests-diagnosis\/con-20031241\">http:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/ebola-virus\/basics\/tests-diagnosis\/con-20031241<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Vaccines and antiviral drugs tested in nonhuman primates<\/li>\n<li>Clinics being looted and running out of basic supplies like disposable gloves<\/li>\n<li>Epidemic continues to spread with an increasing number of new cases being reported each week<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The point is that if we devoted anything close to the resources that were deployed in containing SARS, we could shutdown the Ebola epidemic in a matter of weeks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Worth looking at the way we responded to SARS vs. what is happening with Ebola SARS timeline http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Timeline_of_the_SARS_outbreak The first cases of SARS in humans probably occurred in November 2002 but the WHO was not notified until February 2003.\u00a0 Within a year, we had: Identified a previously unknown pathogen Obtained a complete genome sequence Developed &hellip;
